The Oscar-winning director was released from jail yesterday for 'security reasons' ahead of being placed in his chalet in Gstaad, south-west Switzerland.
'Polanski has undertaken not to leave his house and property at any time,' a statement from the Swiss authorities said.
Polanski has been held since September when he was arrested as he arrived in Zurich to pick up a lifetime achievement award.
Switzerland is still deciding whether to extradite the 76-year-old so he can be sentenced for pleading to unlawful sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl.
Polanski has lived in France, which does not have an extradition treaty with the US, since 1978 when he fled before he could be sentenced.
