West Ham defender Davenport and mum stabbed at home

West Ham United defender Calum Davenport is recovering in hospital after he and his mother suffered stab wounds at his house in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The club said the centre-back underwent surgery today after receiving serious injuries in an assault. Neither Davenport or his mother, said to be recovering, are thought to have sustained life-threatening injuries.

On Saturday evening Bedfordshire police said two men had been arrested, one for attempted murder.

A statement on the Hammers, due to play Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, website said: 'West Ham United can confirm that Calum Davenport was being treated in hospital on Saturday afternoon after an incident late on Friday night.

'The 26-year-old defender and his mum both suffered stab wounds at home in Bedford. His mum is recovering while Calum underwent surgery this morning and his injuries were described as serious by doctors.

'The club's medical team are in contact with hospital staff. The thoughts of everyone at West Ham are with Calum and his family and, due to the ongoing police investigation, no further information will be released at this time.'

According to reports, Davenport sustained stab wounds to both his legs.

Bedfordshire police said officers had been called to an address at 05:00 BST following reports of a stabbing.

A 19-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident, but detectives are still appealing for anyone with information to come forward while house-to-house enquiries are conducted.

A 25-year-old man was also later arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in Derby.ADNFCR-708-ID-19325887-ADNFCR
