The Serbian's 7-6 1-6 7-5 6-2 victory is proof that he is stepping out of Andy Murray's shadow and reclaiming his rightful place in the men's game.
Murray, who is the same age as Djokovic, overtook his friend in the world rankings last year and also took on the mantle of the player most likely to end the Federer/Nadal monopoly.
But with the Scot suffering a shock quarter-final defeat the focus has now switched back to Djokovic who has reached the semi-finals at Flushing Meadows for the third year in a row.
Many considered he should have beaten Roger Federer in the 2007 final where he was defeated in four sets.
He could exact his revenge this year if he can recapture the form which helped him beat the great Swiss player en route to winning the Australian Open title in 2008.
Verdasco gave him some testing moments tonight but the game was already up by the time he called for medical treatment in the final set for a stomach injury.
