The Sony production, featuring voice work from Bill Hader and Anna Faris, took $24.6 million in its second weekend on release to hold off competition from Surrogates, Fame and Pandorum.
Disney sci-fi film Surrogates, starring Bruce Willis as an FBI agent investigating a murder in a seemingly perfect world where humans live remotely through robotic verrsions of themselves, made a disappointing debut of $15 million, despite its $80 million budget and significant marketing drive.
Fame, a remake of the 80s musical drama, opened in third while Matt Damon-starring corporate comedy The Informant! dropped to fourth position, with Tyler Perry's I Can Do Bad All by Myself following in fifth.
Sci-fi horror Pandorum made an underwhelming start in sixth with Love Happens, Jennifer's Body, 9 and Inglourious Basterds all falling three places.
