PC David Micklethwaite mistakenly loaded a Magnum .44 revolver with a live round and pulled the trigger while pointing the gun at Keith Tilbury, a telephone operator.
M Tilbury, 51, was shot through the body and required emergency surgery. He apparently will never be able to work again.
At Southwark crown court this morning, the police force was fined over the incident.
The accident occurred during a training course at Thames Valley police headquarters in Kidlington on May 30th 2007.
