Unseeded Wickmayer defeated Ukranian Kateryna Bondarenko 7-5 6-4 to do so in a low-quality encounter which reflected their respective world rankings of 50 and 52.
Bondarenko had her chances to force a deciding set having forged a 4-1 advantage in the second set. But after Wickmayer got 'pretty mad' at dropping serve she didn't win another game.
Serena Williams reached the semi-finals a day earlier than Wickmayer where her next opponent, Clijsters, poses the biggest threat to her chances of defending her singles crown.
With Clijsters only just having emerged from semi-retirement, Justine Henin having retired years ago and Wickmayer not even seeded, it had seemed unlikely at the start of the US Open fortnight that two Belgians would stand on the verge of making the final.
