The iconic doll brand, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, is the latest popular toy in line for a film adaptation, with the likes of Battleship, Hot Wheels and Monopoly also set for celluloid treatment.
Laurence Mark, whose behind-the-scenes credits include Jerry Maguire and the recent Julie & Julia, will produce the planned Barbie film, according to Variety, though no start date or casting has yet been announced.
There have been 16 straight-to-video animated features about Barbie in her 50 years on the market, but despite the brand extending from toys into fashion and online ventures including a YouTube channel, the new announcement will be Barbie's first live action feature.
'The brand wasn't ready for a movie,' said Richard Dickson, senior vice-president of toy maker Mattel.
'In the last ten years, Barbie has evolved from a toy into an intellectual property. We've already had enormous success in the entertainment industry. Barbie has a proven track record in home entertainment, there have been live stage shows, live symphonies and other non-traditional forms of entertainment.
'There is a flagship store in Shanghai. There are a lot of ways we are already communicating with Barbie's audience, and there is a richness to the brand as an entertainment property.'
Universal and producer Mark will now look for writers for the Barbie film and an intended family-friendly storyline.
'Barbie may be the most popular girl in the world, and has always been a wonderfully aspirational figure, so we must do her proud,' he added.
