Brothers aged ten and 12 have pleaded guilty to attacking, robbing and sexually assaulting two young schoolboys.
The brothers, who cannot be named for legal reasons, admitted grievous bodily harm with intent at a hearing at Sheffield crown court.
The pleas come after they denied a charge of attempted murder, but, as prosecution barristers pointed out, both offences carry the same maximum sentence.
As well as admitting GBH, the two brothers also admitted robbing one of the boys of a mobile phone and cash, and two counts of intentionally causing children to engage in sexual activity.
The attack in question took place in Edlington, Doncaster, South Yorkshire in April.
It left two boys aged nine and 11 in hospital with severe injuries, the full extent of which were laid out in court.
In a case that drew comparisons with the murder of toddler James Bulger by ten-year-olds Robert Thompson and Jon Venables in 1993, it emerged the brothers lured the other boys to a semi-wild wooded area on the outskirts of former pit village Edlington.
There they hit them with sticks and bricks, dropped a sink on one of the boy's head, put a noose round the other's neck and burned their eyelids with cigarettes.
In court it was also heard how one boy had a stick rammed into his arm and cigarettes pushed further inside. In accepting the guilty pleas today the prosecution saved the two victims from having to recount their ordeal in court.
After the attack the nine-year-old boy was found wandering around Edlington drenched in blood by passers-by, managing to tell them his 11-year-old uncle was unconscious at the scene of the attack before passing out himself.
Both victims have now left hospital.
The brothers convicted over the attack, who it was revealed today were on the child protection register, are likely to face significant custodial sentences.
