Troops clash with protestors at Thai temple

A group of demonstrators has clashed with troops in Thailand at the scene of a disputed temple near the Cambodian border, according to local reports.

Thousands of armed militia were deployed in the area during the weekend to quell unrest after protesters gathered to mark the third anniversary of the coup that ousted former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

The group of protestors attempted to gain entry to the site of the 11th century Preah Vihear temple, which has seen a number of violent clashes in recent months.

However, local law enforcement has so far managed to hold back the crowd.

Elsewhere in Bangkok, large groups of pro- and anti-Thaksin demonstrators crowded the streets of the city, leading to further troop deployments.

Fears are rife that the protests could descend into violence, after the last rally six months ago saw dozens injured and a number of vehicles set ablaze.
