A statement from Thailand's royal household said the 81-year-old had been taken to hospital and was suffering from a loss of appetite, fever and fatigue.
Doctors have said King Bhumibol was being treated with antibiotics after being taken to Siriraj hospital in Bangkok on Saturday night. Prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva told reporters there was 'nothing to be concerned about'.
The king's health is of great concern to the majority of Thai people, particularly given the concern regarding his heir Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn. Two years ago the king suffered what was believed to have been a minor stroke.
Dozens of people have gathered outside the hospital to offer their best wishes to the king, who is seen as a unifying figure in the country.
Last month the 81-year-old issued the latest in a series of warnings since a September 2006 coup ousted then-prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, calling for political factions to unite.
Thousands of protesters took to the streets on Saturday, the third anniversary of the coup, to listen to a video speech by Mr Thaksin who is currently in exile.
