According to the Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros are close to signing up writers Kieran and Michele Mulroney - who have worked on the studio's long-delayed Justice League film - to begin work on a first draft of a Sherlock Holmes sequel.
It has also been suggested that Brad Pitt has entered discussions with producers over a starring role as Holmes' nemesis Moriarty in the planned sequel.
The Inglourious Basterds star has been the subject of much internet rumour in recent weeks with claims he makes a brief appearance in the first Sherlock Holmes film, due for release on Boxing Day,
While the actor denied rumours he was a cast member, he has reportedly discussed taking on Robert Downey Jr's Holmes in the sequel.
Shortly after his casting as the iconic detective was confirmed last year, Iron Man star Downey Jr promised a 'bad-ass' take on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's most famous creation.
'I've got to spend some time with Guy and I love his take on it,' he told the Sun newspaper in September 2008.
'We're both martial arts enthusiasts and in the original stories of Sherlock Holmes, he's kind of a bad-ass and a bare-knuckle boxer and studies the rare, fictional martial art of baritsu.
'If you look baritsu up, they can't even really tell you what it is, so it gives us a lot of leeway.'
