The visit will be the first to Britain by a pope since 1982, when Pope John Paul II's arrived for a six-day tour.
Pope Benedict's visit comes after a formal invite first from the Roman Catholic Church of England and Wales and then prime minister Gordon Brown.
His trip to the UK will be the first ever official state visit by a pontiff as John Paul II's trip came without an invitation from the British government.
