Fire crews in California have said they are optimistic about controlling the wildfires that have spread through acres of land north of Los Angeles.
On Monday fire crews said containment of the fires was just five per cent, but by last night that had risen to 22 per cent.
Two firefighters lost their lives in the flames on Sunday, and three civilians are reported to have been burnt in the wildfires. The Los Angeles fire department said 62 structures had been destroyed in the fires, the cause of which is still unknown.
Mike Dietrich, a forest official, said on Tuesday: 'I'm feeling a lot more optimistic today than I did yesterday.
'The crews are doing fabulous work out there on the ground, but the bottom line is that they're fighting for every foot.'
More than 3,655 firefighters are battling to contain the blaze, with eight air tankers and 13 helicopters brought in to try to fight the flames. So far the fires have travelled thousands of acres. It is not yet known how the fires started.
