Afghanistan's deputy chief of intelligence is among 23 killed in a suicide attack east of Kabul, officials in the country have said.
The attack on a mosque in the city of Mehtar Lam, in Laghman province, is believed to have been a targeted attack on Abdullah Laghmani.
The explosion in a crowd is also believed to have killed the head of Laghman's provincial council, the executive director of the governor's office and 20 others, reports from the Associated Press news agency in Kabul claim.
A Reuters news agency witness saw a pick-up truck carrying wounded people covered in blood, and eight ambulances leaving the scene, heading towards Jalalabad, the nearest big city.
