The Sony release, directed by Neill Blomkamp, knocked last week's number one film The Final Destination into second while bittersweet romantic comedy (500) Days of Summer was the only other new entry in the top ten, entering the chart in third.
District 9 tells of an alternative reality Johannesburg, in which an alien race landed some 20 years previously and became marginalised into slums.
With local residents angered by the extraterrestrials' presence, a plan is hatched to evict the aliens and move them to a new settlement, only for a government agent (Sharlto Copley) to become infected with an intergalactic disease and forced into hiding.
Produced by Oscar winning Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson, the film has received almost universally positive reviews and has now repeated its surprise US box office performance with a chart-topping showing in the UK.
