The Juno screenwriter has signed a with the studio to write and produce a film based on Francine Pascal's book series, Variety reports, with Universal in negotiations to acquire the film rights to Sweet Valley High.
Created by Pascal in 1983, there have been more than 152 books in the Sweet Valley series, written by a team of ghostwriters and telling of the lives of two Californian identical twins, bookish Elizabeth Wakefield and her flirtatious sister Jessica.
Former child models Brittany and Cynthia Daniel played Jessica and Elizabeth in a television series that ran for 88 episodes between 1994 and 1997 while it was rumoured Pascal was planning a musical based on the books.
Having outbid Fox, Universal has now signed Cody, whose new film Jennifer's Body this week made a disappointing debut at the US box office, to write and produce a film set in the Sweet Valley High universe, with her manager Mason Novick producing along with Adam Siegel and Marc Platt.
Cody, who won a best original screenplay Academy award for Juno, is also attached to produce Breathers: A Zombie's Lament for Fox Searchlight, based on SG Browne's comedic 2009 novel.
