The Ministry of Defence has announced the death of a British soldier in Afghanistan, the second from the same battle group in 24 hours.
The as-yet unnamed soldier, from the Second Battalion the Mercian Regiment, was with the Light Dragoons battle group when he sustained fatal gunshot wounds during a foot patrol in Babaji distrct, central Helmand province, on Thursday morning.
Last night the MoD announced the death of a soldier from the same group in the same region.
Colonel Nick Richardson, spokesman for Taskforce Helmand, said: 'This brave soldier died bringing a better life to the people of Afghanistan. We mourn his loss and our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and colleagues at this time. His loss has not been in vain.'
Next of kin of both soldiers have been informed, the MoD added.
