Tevez sustained the injury representing Argentina in their 3-1 loss to Brazil last weekend and was consequently ruled out of their World Cup qualifier against Paraguay yesterday.
The 25-year-old joined City for a reported £25 million in July after two seasons with Manchester United.
City boss Mark Hughes told the club's official website that he hopes Tevez's next game for the club will be against their Manchester rivals.
'The hope is that he will be OK for the derby, but we will have to determine that when he comes back,' said Hughes.
'He is staying with the national squad because he needs acute treatment at the early stage of the injury, which is what he can get now.
'Flying him back quickly might compromise the injury, so he will be back towards the end of the week so we can assess him and hopefully get him ready for the United game.'
The Blues beat Arsenal 3-0 in the corresponding fixture last season thanks to an inspirational performance from Robinho, but the Brazilian is a fitness doubt this time round.
'It's a different situation with Robinho. It's an old injury that he aggravated last year, just above his ankle,' added Hughes.
'We are going to get him back as soon as possible, the hope is that he will be an option for the weekend.'
