The cricket-themed book was optioned for the big screen by Winfrey's Harpo Productions after being published in 2008 and Mendes' Neal Street Productions will produce the film for Focus Features, according to Variety.
Mendes, whose new film Away We Go opens in the UK on Friday September 18th, is likely to direct from a script written by Academy award-nominated Atonement screenwriter Christopher Hampton.
Winner of the 2009 PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction, Netherland tells of a Dutch expatriate in New York City who forges a bond with the city's immigrant culture through learning to love cricket.
'We're so glad to have Christopher join our creative partnership with Harpo and Neal Street,' Focus Features CEO James Schamus said after the announcement of the planned Netherland adaptation.
'This project's emotional power has resonated with us all.'
