The reigning world champion recorded a time just under one minute 24 seconds and was three-tenths quicker than his team-mate Heikki Kovalainen, who was shadowed by Adrian Sutil's Force India in the first of the non-KERS cars.
Spain's Fernando Alonso placed his Renault in fourth at the end of the 90-minute morning session and was just one-tenth off the time set by Kovalainen in the McLaren.
Jenson Button was the fastest of the championship contenders, but he could only manage the seventh-quickest time in his Brawn GP, just in front of Ferrari new-boy Giancarlo Fisichella.
Mark Webber was Button's closest challenger in P1 as far as the championship battle is concerned, ending the session in ninth place on the leaderboard.
