Leeds last beat Liverpool at Elland Road in 2000 thanks to Mark Viduka's dazzling four-goal display but Grayson believes his young side have nothing to fear against Rafael Benitez's men.
'There's a great history and tradition with this fixture and it's a great opportunity for our players to pit themselves against the best in the world,' the Leeds manager explained.
'We'll be big-time underdogs, but why can't we be the team that causes an upset?'
Leeds sit top of League One with seven wins from their opening eight games and Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez is in no mood to take the game lightly, despite the likely raft of changes.
The Spaniard told Liverpoolfc.tv: '[The Carling Cup] is very important, and for the players who aren't playing at the moment maybe it is the most important competition.
'Sometimes motivation is harder if a player is playing a lot of games. Maybe they won't consider the Carling Cup as being as important. It is very important, and for the players who aren't playing at the moment maybe it is the most important competition.'
These sentiments were echoed by full-back Fabio Aurelio, who is pushing for his first start of the season after a freak summer injury.
'We want to progress in every competition we’re involved in. The Carling Cup offers a possibility for us to win a trophy and we can't allow that chance to pass easily,' he added.
