Nigel Farage is standing down as leader of the UK Independence party, one day after announcing he would stand against the speaker in the next general election.
At the party's annual conference in Southport later today Mr Farage will explain that running Ukip at home and abroad was too big a job for one person.
Mr Farage, MEP for the south-east region, will instead focus on unseating John Bercow from his Buckingham constituency at the next election.
He will also remain leader of the Europe of freedom and democracy group in the European parliament.
Paying tribute to Mr Farage, Ukip chairman Paul Nuttall said: 'Nigel's great success is that he turned Ukip from a single issue group on the fringe into a fully-fledged political party.
'He's been a fantastic leader and his achievement in taking Ukip from its beginnings to second place in the European elections is truly remarkable.'
A contest to determine Mr Farage's successor will begin next week.
The outgoing leader announced yesterday he was standing against Mr Bercow at the next general election - becoming only the second person to ever to contest a speaker's constituency - as he thought the speaker represented 'all that is wrong with British politics today'.
