Lonmin and Randgold drive FTSE higher

Miners Lonmin, Randgold, Kazakhmys and Eurasian all help drive FTSE 100 up 0.49 per cent in early trading
The FTSE 100 was up 0.49 per cent in early trading today – as miners pushed the index forward after Friday's drops.

At 08:57 GMT, the London index of 100 leading shares stood at 5,069.05, gaining 24.50 points.

Miners pushed forward with Lonmin climbing 3.35 per cent, Randgold rising 2.95 per cent, Kazakhmys up 2.66 per cent and Eurasian gaining 2.64 per cent.

Builders merchant Wolseley rose 2.58 per cent.

Leading the drops was Royal Bank of Scotland, down 5.70 per cent to 39.53p, as it was revealed it was close to signing up to the government asset protection scheme, but it would have to sell off more assets than previously expected.

Lloyds Banking was down 1.38 per cent as it was reveal it too may have to sell of some parts of its business.

3i Group lost 2.35 per cent and Autonomy was down 1.32 per cent.

British Airways was down 1.32 per cent as staff meet to discuss the possibility of a Christmas strike.

In Asia overnight, the Nikkei was down 2.31 per cent and the Sang Seng lost 0.61 per cent.

In Europe this morning, the Dax rose 0.37 per cent and the Cac40 climbed 0.50 per cent.ADNFCR-708-ID-19437270-ADNFCR
