The new figures, which showed 10.2 per cent of Americans are jobless, mean unemployment levels are at their highest since 1983.
It is a rise of 0.4 per cent from September's figures, with around 15.7 million employable Americans looking for work.
In response to the news, president Barack Obama said he was hoping to introduce new stimulus packages to bolster the economy, including additional tax cuts for small business to create jobs and potential road and bridge-building programmes.
These will all be additional measures on top of the recent bill signed into law, which Mr Obama said would 'help grow our economy, save and create new jobs, and provide relief to struggling families and businesses'.
'I won't let up until the Americans who want to find work can find work, and until all Americans can earn enough to raise their families and keep their businesses open,' he added.
