Ferguson: Wes Brown one of the best

Ferguson: Wes Brown one of the best
Sir Alex Ferguson has rejected claims Manchester United are struggling this season with the continuing absence of Rio Ferdinand, singling out Wes Brown for particular praise describing him as 'the best natural defender in the country'.

Ferdinand, 31, is still sidelined with a back problem this week, meaning Brown will partner Nemanja Vidic in the centre of defence for United in their game against Portsmouth on Saturday.

Brown himself has missed out on a large number of games due to injuries, but his manager claims he is now at the age of 30 showing his true worth.

'Wes and Nemanja have been absolutely fantastic in recent games and it just reminds you that Wes, when he is fit, is the best natural defender in the country,' the United boss said.

'Wes and Nemanja are natural defenders and they have the experience of course. But Wes is as good as any of them and most people recognise that.'

Ferguson went on to praise Brown for his continual determination to bounce back from his catalogue of injury setbacks.

'You have to pay tribute to the lad because he keeps coming back from the injuries that he’s had in his career,' Sir Alex said.

'He's had two cruciates, a broken ankle and other injuries. Last season, he had a very staggered season in terms of his injuries. But the season before that, he was our most consistent defender on the way to winning the European Cup in Moscow.

'He just needs continuity and a run of games to get their consistency and timing correct.

'I was doing a summary of the ages and contracts of our players the other day and I saw that Wes is 30, but I keep thinking he is 22 or something!'

United currently lie second in the Premiership, five points behind leaders Chelsea who take on Arsenal at the Emirates on Sunday.ADNFCR-708-ID-19483290-ADNFCR
