The former England defender, now 35, has admitted receiving several offers from around Europe since his sudden departure from Notts County earlier this season.
But it seems the Magpies are favourites for his signature as Campbell believes they represent a good opportunity to return to the Premier League.
'I have been approached by several clubs, and yes, it is correct to say that Newcastle are one of them,' he told ESPN Soccernet.
'People might be surprised to hear me say that I would be very interested in a move there, but I have my reasons.
'Also, Newcastle are a big club and could be heading back to the Premier League. It appeals.'
Campbell remains in limbo as Notts County are refusing to release his registration until he signs an agreement with his former club over what he is and is not allowed to disclose about the new owners at Meadow Lane.
But the veteran defender is also adamant that this situation could be resolved soon if he gets his case heard by a Football League tribunal.
'I have spoken with [PFA chief] Gordon Taylor and he will impress upon the League the urgency of the case and try to make a tribunal hearing a priority.
'If we can sort it all out at the tribunal I would hope to be playing within weeks from now.'
In the meantime, Campbell continues to train with former side Arsenal but Gunners manager Arsene Wenger has ruled out any prospect of re-signing him.
