After performing well in the last two races at Spa and Monza, the Force India team struggled to get to grips with their high-downforce configuration and found themselves fighting at the back of the field.
Sutil said he had a frustrating first stint to the race while stuck behind the slower Jaime Alguersuari and the he span while trying to overtake the Spanish rookie.
'He was holding me up a lot and I tried a few times to pass him but I finally saw a chance,' explained Sutil.
'I tried and it wasn't enough - I was a little late on the brakes, spun and that's it.
'Then Nick came around the corner and hit my front wing as I was stuck in the corner.
'I didn't see him coming as I was on the move already and couldn't react to it, but I'm sorry for it.
'It was a race incident.
After the incident with Heidfeld, Sutil continued on, only to be forced into retirement by a loss of pressure in his rear brakes.
But the German said he is now looking ahead to the Japanese grand prix, which will be hosted by Suzuka next weekend.
'We should be much better in Suzuka - I really can't wait for it,' said Sutil.
'It's one of my favourite circuits and I have big hopes for a better result.'
