Paulton Rovers 0-7 Norwich City

Norwich City strolled through to the second round of the FA Cup after brushing aside Zamaretto Division One side Paulton Rovers at Winterfield Road.

Paulton, five divisions below the Canaries, were outclassed by a Norwich side eager not to suffer a shock cup exit as Chris Martin bagged four goals, Grant Holt scored a brace and Wes Hoolahan got the other in the rout.

The home side began the first half better than Norwich and had the first real chance of the game when James Tyrrell nearly lobbed Norwich keeper Declan Rudd, but the England under-19 keeper managed to turn the ball over.

From the resulting corner hard working forward Rob Claridge had his goal ward header blocked by Michael Nelson.

As you can expect the Paulton players showed no signs of lacking commitment none more so than captain Dan Cleverley, playing with an injured foot assisted by a pain killer injection, who flew into an early crunching challenge.

After a nervy first ten minutes for Norwich they began to find their feet and Martin had his deflected effort denied by the crossbar.

Inside 15 minutes Norwich went ahead via in-form striker Holt, who netted his seventh goal in as many games. The Norwich captain was unmarked to head down Korey Smith’s deep cross to settle the nerves of the 500 travelling fans.

Norwich began to control the game, passing the ball comfortably around midfield and on 23 minutes they doubled their lead.

Hoolahan slipped in Martin, who calmly tucked the ball passed Phillips after defender Oliver Price played him onside.

Paulton skipper Cleverley was really struggling with his foot and had to be replaced in the 37th minute by chemist undergraduate Philip Waters.

With Norwich now in total command it was crucial for Paulton to get the next goal and responded well, creating opportunities and winning corners but failed to have any real final product.

Unfortunately for the non-league side it was Norwich who added a third via Holt on 42 minutes. The big centre forward was again unmarked to head home Hoolahan’s corner.

With Paulton 3-0 down at half time manager Andrew Jones explained that it was important to, ‘rally the boys and come out and get a goal for the fans.’

Paulton began the second half solidly and were clearly eager to establish a sense of pride into their performance.

But Norwich soon resumed where they left off and Holt had two great opportunities to get his hat trick. He firstly headed over from two yards out and was minutes later denied by a smothering save from Philips.

Meanwhile Paulton replaced Chris Lane for Rob Cousins who recorded his 987th appearance for the home side. In the 58th minute Paulton had a great opportunity to get a consolation goal when Rudd had to palm away Price’s header from close range.

It took just under 30 minutes of second half action before Norwich increased their lead and it was the impressive Wes Hoolahan who curled the ball beautiful into the top right corner.

The tiring Paulton defence was really beginning to open up and Norwich started to run away with it when Martin made it five for the travelling team.

The 21-year-old striker then took home the match ball in the 83rd minute when he outsmarted Paulton keeper Phillips by passing his free kick into the bottom corner.

Martin rounding off a convincing seven nil win for Norwich when he headed in Jens Berthel Askou’s clipped cross.ADNFCR-708-ID-19448639-ADNFCR
