The Aussie secured only his second career victory yesterday at Interlagos, after leapfrogging Rubens Barrichello in the first round of pit-stops and in a post-race interview, Webber said that he knew he was in charge of the race.
'For me to win in Brazil, as there are a lot of big memories from me with Ayrton Senna and everything, it’s a special day for me and for my team,' said Webber.
'After the first stop I knew the gap was pretty solid and we were in charge from there really so all I had to do was bring the car home.
'It was a long way to be in charge, but it’s a good problem to have.'
Webber’s win was eclipsed by Jenson Button’s world championship win, which he clinched by climbing up the order from 14th to fifth place.
The Aussie said that Button is a deserved champion and that his performance during the first half of the season made it difficult for anyone to catch him.
'You know with Jenson that he’s consistent, that’s something I’ve always said throughout this year,' said Webber.
'Unfortunately, at the start of the year, he was blisteringly quick as well and with the form he showed early on in the championship when Brawn came out with their double diffuser they were really running well and he was on top of the car.
'And, myself, Sebastien Vettel and Rubens Barrichello had a shopping list of excuses about why we weren’t quick but, at the end of the day, we weren’t and Button was.
'He put a big hit in the championship and then other teams came along, particularly Kimi Raikkonen and Lewis Hamilton, but he did what he needed to do and he is a deserved champion.'
