Ferguson praises United maturity

Sir Alex Ferguson praises his team
Sir Alex Ferguson has praised his team's maturity after their narrow win over CSKA Moscow in Russia.

Much of the build-up before the game was about the artificial pitch at the Luzhniki Stadium, but Ferguson had no complaints after an 86th minute goal from Antonio Valencia saw Manchester United claim the three points.

The result equals Ajax's Champions League record of 14 away games unbeaten – a milestone Ferguson says the team should be proud of.

'I said before the game that if you're a good footballer you concentrate on the ball. I think they did that and they did it well,' he said.

'The away record is something we should be proud of. It is not easy away from home in Europe and we have been to some fantastic places over the years. I think it shows maturity.

'There is a way of playing in Europe away from home and I think you saw that. We showed good patience and retained good possession and I think that was the key factor.'

Ferguson said the players should be 'very pleased' with the performance although he was careful to suggest the job of qualifying for the next round was not yet complete.

'The situation in the group is now nine points. I have always maintained that you need ten to qualify,' he added.

'We now have a home game against CSKA in two weeks' time which we hope can take us to the next stage.'ADNFCR-708-ID-19422276-ADNFCR
