Chelsea appeal for transfer ban freeze

Chelsea want a stay from their transfer embargo to sign players in January
Chelsea have petitioned the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) to have their 18-month transfer embargo put back until after the 2010 January window.

The Blues were told they could not register any new players until January 2011 after Fifa found them guilty of inciting youngster Gaël Kakuta to break a contract with French club Lens in 2007.

However, after appealing against the verdict last month Chelsea have now asked Cas for a stay until next year, when a decision on the validity of the ban will be reached.

'Chelsea Football Club and Gaël Kakuta have filed appeals at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) against the decision issued by the Fifa dispute resolution chamber on August 27th 2009,' read a brief statement from the arbiter.

'Both Chelsea FC and Kakuta have requested that the Fifa decision be stayed pending the outcome of the Cas arbitration.

'A decision concerning the request for a stay is likely to be issued by the Cas at the beginning of November.'

In addition to the transfer embargo, Chelsea have also been ordered to pay Lens compensation of 130,000 euro (£118,000).

Kakuta himself is banned from appearing for Chelsea in an official game for four months and is due to pay his former club 780,000 euros (£710,000) compensation for which Chelsea are jointly liable.ADNFCR-708-ID-19422300-ADNFCR
