Vikki Thompson was found beaten and unconscious at the side of a railway line near her home in Ascott-under-Wychwood over 14 years ago.

The 30-year-old later died in hospital.

Thames Valley police confirmed on Wednesday a 34-year-old man from the same village had been arrested on suspicion of murder and taken to an Oxfordshire police station.

The arrest comes four years after police launched a fresh appeal for information relating to Ms Thompson's death.

She disappeared on August 12th 1995 while walking her dog and was found with severe head injuries and taken to hospital where she later died.

Her family released a statement in light of the arrest saying: 'Fourteen years ago Vikki was brutally attacked whilst out walking her dog along a country lane. She never recovered consciousness and died six days later.

'Vikki was only 30 years old. She was a loving wife and mother. She was much loved by all her family and friends and is desperately missed.

'Time has passed by now, but still we never forget the loss we suffered, when Vikki was taken away from us.

'We are aware of the arrest this morning by Thames Valley police major crime review team and support their work in trying to find who killed Vikki.

'Vikki herself deserves the justice that has not yet been found.'

No-one has ever been prosecuted for her murder.ADNFCR-708-ID-19420599-ADNFCR
