In tricky conditions, the Australian side managed 130-2 with Australian opener Phil Hughes unbeaten on 62. The English twenty20 champions who were without Captain Mike Yardy could only manage 95-8 off their 20 overs.
Moises Henriques was the stand out performer with his all round display, blasting 51 off only 33 deliveries and returning bowling figures of 3 for 23.
The result means the Australian team have secured a place in the second round of the tournament having beaten South African outfit Eagles.
Explosive opening batsmen David Warner was run out in the eighth over after a wonderful piece of fielding from West Indian Dwayne Smith.
Hughes played the anchor role and allowed the 22-year-old Henriques to give the innings a boost in the latter stages. And he was particularly severe on Indian leg spinner Piyush Chawla taking 17 off one over.
On a difficult pitch in which batting was never easy, Sussex’s response was dealt with a blow with Ed Joyce out first ball of the opening over.
The Sharks batsmen never really recovered and despite some positive intent shown by Rory Hamilton Brown and Smith, they could only muster a total of 95 in a disappointing effort.
The result means the last group match against Eagles on Tuesday is a must win game.
