Both Kovalainen and his compatriot Kimi Raikkonen entered the pits together to make their stops and in his haste to beat the Ferrari driver, Kovalainen drove out of his pit-box with his fuel hose still attached.
Fuel was sprayed along the pit road and over Raikkonen’s Ferrari, causing the fuel to burst into flames.
The stewards announced they would be investigating the incident and deemed Kovalainen’s release by McLaren to have been unsafe - landing the Woking-based squad with a $50,000 fine and the Finn a 25-second penalty, which dropped him from ninth to 12th.
