Man ruled out of Melanie Hall investigation

A man who was arrested on suspicion of the murder of Melanie Hall, the missing woman whose bones were discovered by the M5 motorway near Bristol, has been eliminated as a suspect.

A spokeswoman for Avon and Somerset police told inthenews.co.uk a 37-year-old man had walked into a police station early on Thursday morning.

After being interviewed, however, he was formally eliminated as a suspect.

The spokeswoman also confirmed the man was currently undergoing a mental health assessment.

Ms Hall's remains were discovered on Monday by a workman in a bag and partly buried by a slip road off the northbound M5.

The bones were covered and wrapped in bin liners and are police believed they had been at the site for a 'very considerable time'.

Ms Hall, from Bradford Leigh, Wiltshire, went missing in June 1996 after a night out in Bath.

The 25-year-old had worked as a clerical officer at Bath's Royal United Hospital and

Her parents, Steve and Patricia Hall, held a press conference on Thursday during which Mr Hall said: 'Thirteen years ago we had a young vibrant daughter, happy with a future in front of her, today we have a bag of bones discarded at the side of a motorway.'

Police also confirmed they were treating Ms Hall's death as murder.
