At 08:55 BST, the London blue chip index was up 67.04 points to 5,221.19.The miners provided the strong backbone to the gains today on hopes a sustained global economic recovery was now more likely.
Kazakhmys was up 4.41 per cent, Xstrata gained 3.60 per cent, Rio Tinto rose 3.42 per cent, Vedanta Resources rose 3.38 per cent and Cairn Energy climbed 3.35 per cent.
Heading the drops today was International Power - down 2.36 per cent, followed by Tesco down 1.43 per cent.
Property stocks British Land and Hammerson fell 1.35 per cent and 1.07 per cent respectively.
In the US last night, the Dow was down 0.15 per cent and the S&P 500 lost 0.28 per cent.
In Europe this morning the Cac 40 was up 1.20 per cent and the Dax gained 1.27 per cent.
