Record-breaking cyclist Mark Cavendish; teenage diving sensation Tom Daley; star heptathlete Jessica Ennis; Manchester United's Ryan Giggs; triple jumper Phillips Idowu; Britain's number one tennis player Andy Murray and gymnast Beth Tweddle complete the shortlist.
The nominees will be put to the public vote on December 13th while the show is broadcast live on BBC1 from the Sheffield Arena.
Awards for team of the year; coach of the year, overseas sports personality of the year; lifetime achievement; Helen Rollason award; young sports personality of the year and sports unsung hero will also be announced.
Last year the award was won by triple Olympic cycling gold medallist Chris Hoy, ahead of then formula one world champion Lewis Hamilton and two-time Olympic swimming gold medallist Rebecca Adlington.
