New version of Iraqi election law passed

New version of Iraqi election law passed
Iraq's parliament has agreed on a new version of the long-awaited law which should pave the way for national elections early next year.

It was announced late on Sunday MPs had reached an agreement following an emergency session.

The original version of the law was rejected by Tariq al-Hashemi, one of the country's two vice-presidents, who claimed it failed to adequately represent Iraqis living abroad, most of whom are Sunnis.

Mr al-Hashemi's veto threatened to further delay the elections which are seen as a prerequisite to the US withdrawing combat troops from next year.

However, following the parliamentary vote he withdrew his veto and praised the amendments in providing a fairer deal for the country's minorities.

The White House also hailed the passing of the new version of the law as 'a decisive moment for Iraq's democracy'.

National elections had originally been scheduled for January 16th but due to disagreements are now likely to be held sometime in February.

The new law will see the Iraqi parliament expand from 275 seats to 325.ADNFCR-708-ID-19498155-ADNFCR
