The 33-year-old suffered the injury against India earlier this year and aggravated the problem last month, leading to speculation he could quit the international scene if he is forced to take an extended break from the game.
However, after overseeing the operation Cricket Australia medical officer Dr Trefor James believes he will return to the bowling ranks after going through a bespoke rehabilitation programme.
'He needs to wear a brace for about six weeks before he starts more intensive rehab,' Dr James said.
'His bowling return will be determined in due course as he is assessed by the surgeon and our medical staff.'
Lee, who has taken more than 600 wickets for his country in Test matches and one-day internationals, will be hopeful of making it back in time to take on rivals New Zealand in March next year.
