Peter Chapman, 32, of no fixed abode, is accused of killing 17-year-old Ashleigh Hall.
Her body was found on farmland near Sedgefield, County Durham, last Monday.
On Tuesday Mr Chapman appeared via videolink at Teeside crown court charged with manslaughter and kidnap.
Neither a plea nor an application for bail was entered at the hearing and the 32-year-old was remanded into custody until January.
The next hearing has been set for January 4th.
Ashleigh, from Warwick Square, Darlington, was found dead near the Little Chef roundabout, off the A689 and A177 roads, near Sedgefield on October 26th.
Her cause of death has yet to be ascertained, with further tests ongoing following an inconclusive post-mortem.
Ashleigh's mother Andrea has since paid tribute to her daughter, describing her as 'loving, honest, caring and well-liked'.
