The Scot beat Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro in three sets in the showpiece on Sunday night to claim his fourth career Masters Series title.
And with the trophy and the subsequent 1000 ATP world ranking points, Murray has now overtaken former number one Rafael Nadal in the standings.
The Spaniard has been struggling with tendonitis in his knees since his surprise defeat to Robin Soderling in the French Open earlier this season and he was later forced to withdraw from Wimbledon to take a prolonged rest.
As a result, Nadal lost the number one ranking when Roger Federer won his sixth grass court grand slam title at SW19.
And Murray's victory in Montreal means the Majorcan star slips to third in the list - his lowest for nearly four years.
Murray's next challenge is to successfully defend his Cincinnati Masters title this week, beginning with a second round test against world number 33 Nicolas Almagro of Spain.
The Briton's US Open campaign is due to begin on Monday August 31st.
