Lockerbie bomber Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al Megrahi will discover later today whether he will be allowed to return to Libya.
The Scottish government is due to announce at around 13:00 BST whether the 57-year-old will be freed from prison.
Megrahi, who is terminally ill with prostate cancer, is currently serving a life sentence for the bombing of Pan Am flight 103, which killed 270 people in 1988.
His lawyers have long-campaigned for his release on compassionate grounds, due to the suggestions that his condition is not expected to improve.
And he will finally discover later today whether he will be released or transferred into Libyan custody.
On Tuesday, Scottish judges allowed him to drop an appeal against his conviction, affectively paving the way for a decision to be made on his release.
Scottish justice secretary Kenny MacAskill's imminent decision has already caused huge controversy, with US secretary of state Hillary Clinton calling for the Libyan to remain behind bars.
Mrs Clinton declared this week that it would 'absolutely wrong' for the Scottish government to grant Megrahi's release.
Some 189 Americans were among the 270 people killed in the terrorist attack 21 years ago.
