Iraq's PM orders review after devastating attacks

Iraq's prime minister Nouri al-Maliki has ordered a security review after the deadliest attack in a year left almost 100 people dead in series of blasts in Baghdad.

The Iraqi capital witnessed six separate attacks on Wednesday, injuring more than 500 people.

The largest of the attacks appears to have targeted the foreign and finance ministry, with police claiming lorries laden with explosives detonated close to the government buildings.

Iraqi officials have blamed the 'Baathist alliance' for the attacks, in reference to the political party of the former president Saddam Hussein.

Mr Maliki described the attacks yesterday as a 'desperate attempt to derail the political process'.

'The criminal operations that happened no doubt call for a re-evaluation of our plans and our security methods to face the terrorist challenges,' he said.

The prime minister admitted the insurgents had taken advantage of the removal of barrier and concrete blast walls in the capital.

The attacks yesterday came on the sixth anniversary of the bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad, killing 22 people.ADNFCR-708-ID-19321871-ADNFCR
