Ferguson: We should have done better

Sir Alex Ferguson felt his Manchester United side could have done more to avoid their shock 1-0 defeat against Burnley at Turf Moor last night.

Robbie Blake's thunderous volley was the difference between the two teams on the night, sealing a famous victory for the Clarets.

And a humble Ferguson also conceded that it was Burnley's night to remember.

'We're disappointed,' said the United boss.

'It wasn't a great performance by Manchester United but, saying that, maybe it was just a night for Burnley.

'They've been out of the Premier Division for 30-odd years - maybe it was their night because so many things happened in that penalty box it was just amazing we didn't get one.

'Maybe if we'd scored the penalty just before half-time we'd have gone on to win but, nevertheless, you can't deny them the victory. They've been a long time out of the Premier Division.'

Despite claiming his side wasted chances to claim victory, Ferguson did not hold back in praising the opposition - admitting Burnley played 'very well', Blake's winner was 'a fantastic hit' and the newly promoted side caused a 'real threat' from crosses.

'We didn't defend [their goal] well and we should have been back goal-side of the lad, but it was a great strike,' he explained.

'From there on, it was complete domination and in these situations, with our experience, we should have been doing better.'

Meanwhile, Michael Owen missed another good chance to open his Manchester United account and was substituted on 63 minutes.

Despite Owen's disappointing performance, Ferguson believes the striker will get better with match practise.

'I think he's probably in need of two or three games,' he said.

'I think that'll help him.'ADNFCR-708-ID-19321876-ADNFCR
