The FTSE 100 remained under the 4,700 mark but did make slight gains over the day, led by Amec.
The blue-chip index moved 0.88 per cent higher to 4,685.78, led by engineering firm Amec, which was up by 4.07 per cent.
Legal & General rose 3.87 per cent, while InterContinental Hotels rose by 3.42 per cent.
British Land offset some of the gains, falling 2.66 per cent, followed by Vedanta Resources, down by 1.8 per cent.

But a strong start on Wall Street helped boost the index and the FTSE 100 spiked just before closing.
By early afternoon in New York, the Dow Jones was up by 0.79 per cent, while the S&P 500 rose by 0.84 per cent.
