Liverpool have agreed a deal for AEK Athens defender Sotirios Kyrgiakos with the transfer subject to a medical.
The Greek will sign for a fee thought to be in the region of £1.5 million.
Kyrgiakos spent a spell at Rangers, playing 43 games and scoring once - his only goal was the winner against FC Porto in a Champions League tie.
He has also enjoyed spells at Panathinaikos and Eintracht Frankfurt.
The 30-year-old international has made 50 appearances for his country but missed their Euro 2004 triumph through injury.
'He has experience in British football with Rangers. After that with Frankfurt and the national team. He's a good player in the air, strong and aggressive. We were looking for a player with experience,' manager Rafa Benitez told Liverpool's official website.
'The young players know they need experience and so to learn alongside people with this experience is better.'
