Toyota team principal John Howett has said that his team will continue to push on with development of the TF109 in an attempt to secure the Japanese manufacterer’s first win in formula one.
Toyota started 2009 with a strong package and were consistently at te head of the field in the opening rounds of the season and even managed to lock out the front row in Bahrain.
But the team fell by the wayside when they seemingly took a wrong turn with development of the TF109.
In the last race in Hungary, despite a poor showing in qualifying, Timo Glock and Jarno Trulli finished the race in fifth and sixth respectively and have similar aspirations for the coming grand prix in Valencia.
But Howett believes the team can do more and are capable of going on to win races this year. He said: 'Our organisation exists to win races so that is always the goal and this year I believe we are closer than ever to doing that.
'This is a team effort and everyone is working flat-out together to fulfil the huge potential of the TF109.
'We'll see how the rest of the season goes but we have the passion and dedication to win this year,' he added.
Howett believes the surest way of winning Toyota‘s first grand prix is to pursue a relentless development programme and he said the team will not considered ditching 2009 in favour of their 2010 campaign.
'We still have targets to reach this season so we have not even considered switching all development to the 2010 car,' said Howett.
'Significant work is going on in parallel on the 2010 car, as was always planned, but we are still working hard to extract more performance from the TF109.
'We have an extremely competitive baseline this year so the challenge is to keep up development and unlock all the potential of our package.
'We have a duty to ourselves, our partners and fans to push on at full throttle with our development programme but, more importantly, we know the leading cars are not out of reach so we must fight for every bit of extra performance,' he continued.
And Howett stated that the team expect to make another step forward next season, but have yet to set any specific aims.
'It is too early to talk about specific goals, that's clear, but our team exists to win so that is our natural target,' said the Toyota team principal.
'However, we still have plenty we want to achieve in 2009, which remains our clear focus,' he added.
