A dip in US markets was echoed on the FTSE 100 in early trade, droppeing 1.9 per cent to 4,624.29.
The index dipped below the 4,700 mark by 09:00 BST, led by commercial property firm Liberty International, which was down by 4.92 per cent, and Hammerson, down by 3.89 per cent.
This morning's falls followed Friday's rally in the sector, which was sparked by bid talk for British Land.
Mining stocks were also trading lower, with Kazakhmys down by 4.46 per cent and Xstrata lower by 4.14 per cent.
Few stocks were rising on the index, but defensives were among those making gains.
Aviva was up by 0.91 per cent, while AstraZeneca was up by 0.43 per cent and Wm Morrison rose by 0.19 per cent.
Over in the US, markets fell on Friday, breaking a four-week winning streak.
The Dow Jones was off by 0.82 per cent, while the S&P 500 dropped by 0.85 per cent after a deterioration in consumer confidence dented hopes of an economic recovery.
