England footballer Jermain Defoe has accused the police of harassment after he was pulled over in his Ferrari, days after claiming he would sue for wrongful arrest.
The Tottenham Hotspur player was pulled over by Essex police after travelling to see his mother following his team's 2-1 victory over Liverpool at the weekend.
The police stop came just three days after the 26-year-old announced he was planning on suing the same police force over what he claims was a 'wrongful' arrest when questioned on suspicion of driving while disqualified.
The latest incident took place around 23:00 BST on Sunday. Police claim Defoe was stopped as part of an operation tackling burglaries of valuable cars and was allowed to continue after basic checks were made.
His lawyer, Nick Freeman, however, said the actions of the police 'beggar belief'.
'At best, this is an embarrassing cock-up,' he said.
'At worst, it smacks of something far more sinister, which can only add weight to growing concerns that they are being vindictive and my client is being harassed.'
Essex police said that once officers had satisfied themselves that all was in order, Defoe was allowed continue on his way.
