Phillips suffers ligament damage

Ospreys scrum-half Mike Phillips ruled out of Wales
Wales and Ospreys scrum-half Mike Phillips has been ruled out of the autumn internationals after suffering knee ligament damage at the weekend.

Phillips was injured during the region's victory over Clermont Auvergne in the Heineken Cup on Sunday.

And after undergoing scans on Monday evening and discussing the results with Ospreys physio Chris Towers, Phillips looks set for a rehabilitation period of at least ten weeks.

'Mike had a scan yesterday, which was then reviewed with the specialist, who confirmed ligament damage to the distal tib/fib joint,' Towers confirmed.

'Mike will now be subjected to further specialist tests and investigations towards the end of the week once the pain and swelling has subsided sufficiently to allow it.

'This will put us in a better position to confirm the best course of treatment going forward, but it is fair to say that Mike has suffered considerable ligament damage and the best-case scenario would probably see him sidelined in the region of ten to 12 weeks.'

Before suffering the injury, Phillips was expected to be the starting number nine for Wales when they take on New Zealand, Samoa, Argentina and Australia in November.

Now, however, it seems he is unlikely to return to action for club or country until early 2010.ADNFCR-708-ID-19418107-ADNFCR
